More about this tour

Our tour begins in the beating heart of the city: Rynek, or Market Square. Covering almost four hectares, it is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. Here, the Gothic architecture of the Old Town Hall blends with the Renaissance and Baroque façades of the former merchants’ houses. A little-known fact is that the cellars of the Town Hall house the Świdnica Cellar, one of Europe’s oldest restaurants, which has been in continuous operation since 1273.

A short walk away, the University of Wroclaw stands as a monument to the power and faith of the Habsburg era. Founded in 1702 by Emperor Leopold I, this complex is the finest example of Baroque architecture in the region. Its undisputed jewel is the Aula Leopoldina, a space where the acoustics and pictorial decoration merge to create an optical illusion of depth and movement. During the visit, we will discover how this institution survived the turbulent changes in borders and became a centre of scientific excellence.

Continuing northwards, we will cross the bridges over the Oder River to enter the tranquillity of Ostrow Tumski, the Cathedral Quarter. This is the oldest part of Wroclaw, where time seems to have stood still. Here stands St John the Baptist’s Cathedral, whose reconstruction after the Second World War stands as a testament to the city’s resilience. As a fascinating historical detail, Ostrów Tumski preserves one of Europe’s most unique traditions: every evening, a lamplighter dressed in a cape and top hat walks the streets to manually light the more than one hundred gas lamps that illuminate the neighbourhood, just as was done centuries ago.

Finally, our walk will reveal the city’s most curious and rebellious side: the gnomes of Wroclaw. Although today they are a charming symbol, their origins are deeply political and date back to the 1980s. Today, these bronze figures scattered throughout the city tell stories of ancient trades, local legends and civic values.

This tour is not merely a sightseeing trip, but a journey through the historical layers of a city that has been Polish, Czech, Austrian and German, and which today presents itself as a modern, open and deeply welcoming metropolis.
